somewhere to perch my derriere.......

I decided a little while ago that I needed a new picnic blanket.....
I wanted bright and breezy.......
I wanted summery.......
I wanted unique.....
I wanted a good size..... enough for four derriere's at least.....

'I could make one' I thought and took myself off to IKEA
to have a quick gander in their fabric department.......

the children were there to help me but, to be honest, they weren't
a lot of help...... they didn't agree with me...... so I went my own
sweet way and just chose the fabric I liked the look of.......

one and a half meters of top fabric and one and a half meters of
backing fabric later (plus one of their inexpensive fleeces to provide
a little padding...... my behind likes a little padding it has to be said.....)
and we made our merry way home with isaac still exclaiming that he
was 'not going to be seen dead' sitting on my new picnic rug........

there was a bit of tongue-poking-out-in-a-thoughtful-way whilst trying
to work out the mechanics of 'getting it all together' and 'keeping it all in place',
a little bit of sewing and a couple of 'oooohhh, errrrr' moments but
the new picnic rug for keeping behinds dry and comfy
(whilst fulfilling my need for something bright and colourful and unique)
has been completed and is now living in the car boot with the other picnic knick-knacks.....
it has had the opportunity to brighten up the grass a couple of times already
and I have to say that I'm rather taken with it.......

would you like a little peek?  ok, here it is.......

I don't care that the background colour on the top fabric is white......
it will be well used and well loved (and probably well washed too)....

the nuts and bolts of my picnic rug

the top fabric is from IKEA.....
the backing fabric (also from IKEA) is one of their oilcloths and
was on sale at the time of purchase.....
I bought one of their inexpensive fleece blankets to layer in between
the top and bottom fabrics for a bit of 'cushioning'......
the straps were made from offcuts of fabric and I attached a
clasp at the ends so that the blanket can be all folded up and clipped
neatly together.....

total cost was around 10GBP..... billy bargain.....

Nice Deb, couldn't use it here though!! You'd get bogged if you sat on the grass at the moment, I think the water table is back up about an inch from the surface again.........sigh....roll on summer! Hope you're all well, we miss you at staff meetings down under :o)
