Toasty.....

Over on my other blog, I was sharing with people a lovely pair of slippers that my sister gifted me a few weeks ago.

Realising that it really is getting quite chilly here in the evenings and mornings I thought I should really get a wriggle on and make my children the warm rice bags I have been planning to make them since..... well, forever!

So today was the day.

I had purchased just half a metre of sweet unisex printed flannel (even though it was quite 'babyish' Isaac still thought it was fine for his rice pillow to be made from it!!) when it was on special offer and after a bit of 'umming' and 'ahhing' (and perusing other peoples' rice bag creations) I decided I would make an inner rice bag from calico and make the outer from the flannel made up like a pillow case, that way I could wash the outer when needed and the inner bag would stay nice and clean (that's the theory anyway!)

This is so easy that your kids could make one themselves (maybe as a gift for someone!) so if you (or your kids) want to have a go here's how I did it.......

Start by making a calico bag (mine was 28cm by 20cm) and stitching it round three sides leaving one long side open.

Turn it and then sew four channels starting from the bottom sewn edge towards the top open edge stopping about a centimetre away from the top and back stitching to secure your stiches.

Fill each channel about 2/3rds full with rice, turn the top seams inwards 1/2 a centimeter and top stitch along the top.

That's the inner done!

The outer was just a long piece of flannel 30cm by 50cm with turned under hems on both short sides. I folded both short sides towards one another (with right sides facing) and overlapped them by about 5cm. Finally, I stitched up both sides seams and then turned the whole thing right side out thus making an envelope opening at the back......

All finished and ready for use......

A minute or two in the microwave and these are so toasty warm for the kids to snuggle up with.

You could even put some lavender in or some essential oil to give it a pretty smell too.....

I decided against using any sort of closure for the opening at the back as I didn't want anything that would possibly rub or cause discomfort but you could use a piece of velcro or a button if you wanted to keep it more secure.

OK, I'm off to pop these in the microwave for their trial night......
