that monday morning feeling.....

actually, it's holidays here so this monday morning feeling is a bit like a saturday morning feeling...... yippee!

hope you had a fun weekend..... we certainly did..... it consisted of lots of lazing around {recovering from the holiday sea air and 'sleeping in a strange bed' tiredness} and I even got to spend some time in my lovely sewing corner.....

I had a project in mind..... for evie...... per her request......

a new apron.....

you see, for the past nine years she has been wearing one that she was given for her first birthday, and you could say that it is a tad too small...... cute, but a little 'snug' shall we say.....

she's used it in the kitchen for cooking and baking and she's also used it for her artistic persuits..... there's no distinguishing between the different art forms and the need for different aprons in our house......

in fact, my own apron has paint smeared all over it so she must be a chip off the old block..... that's my girl......

anyway, the 'cute yet snug' apron had got to the point of not covering up very much of her clothing while she 'created' and so we both thought it was about time she had a new apron for her 'nearly 10 year old' frame..... we will pack the 'little' apron up and put it in her treasure box so that she can always get it out and enjoy looking at it .... my kids love to get old stuff out and reminisce.....

anyway, back to the job in hand, in true 'making it up as I go along' style I spent sunday afternoon drawing {a haphazard pattern that looked kinda like it might sorta work}, cutting {old bedsheets and nightshirts} and sewing bits and bobs together in my own 'fashion'......

she wanted 'pretty' and 'ruffles' so that's what she got, but boy oh boy those ruffles are fiddly to do...... I'm sure there is an easier way to do them {I don't mean an easier way to actually make the ruffles...... I can do that bit..... it's attaching them to the skirt of the apron I found fiddly.....}

she wanted knee length.....

and she wanted a big pocket to put 'all her kitchen utensils in' ...... lol!

so after a few hours of 'cutting and pasting' {aka sewing} this is what we ended up with.......

the main fabric for the front {and the back too because I lined it on the reverse so I could turn the whole thing to give me neat edges}, are two old bedsheets picked up at the op shop, I showed you them here and here......

the pocket was made from the edging of an old nightshirt..... I kept the crocheted edging along the bottom and used the piece with the pretty embroidered flowers to give a little bit of detail......

the straps were also made from the nightshirt..... I had to piece strips together to get long enough lengths for the straps......

the side loops and ruffles were all made from pieces in my scrap pile {yet another way to use up my scraps!!}......

she was very pleased with the finished apron and has yet to take it {or her pj's} off today..... but as it's the holidays, I don't suppose it really matters.....
